Why does Raavan want Sita? Raavan has everything. He has a vey beautiful and intelligent wife. He has all the wealth of the world. In fact, his entire city is made of gold. He has all the knowledge. He has great strength. Then, why does he want Sita? What have all these achievements done to him? Have they satiated his soul, or have they made it even thirstier? But why do we become thirstier the more water we drink?

Is it about Raavan only? Have the billionaires who have earned billions of dollars quenched their thirst? Aren’t people who have great respect in society thirsty for more respect? Are people who have a wide network of relationships not thirsty for more relationships? Businessmen always want expansion of their empire. Politicians want to grab more and more power. The powerful want to grow more powerful. If we get care, we want more of it. If everything is going well in life, we want some adventure. Why are we always thirsty to get more?

We want more in relationships. A person may have taken care of us for 20 years, but if he gives other priorities, we become restless. We want more of that. We may have had great health throughout our lives, but we want to remain perfect even in old age. Why “Ye Dil Always Wants More”? Probably because Ye Dil never focused on what it really wants. Probably society holds up a mirror in front of us, where we see the image society wants us to see. Probably we never get to see our image in a real mirror. Having watched our image in that “social mirror” all through our lives, we become so convinced of that “social image” that we never ask ourselves the right question. “Who am I?”

It is not “Dil” which wants more; in fact, it is ego which wants more. In some old Bollywood movies, we see a character rob a rich orphan of his property by pretending to be a well-wisher, and the young boy, not mature enough to understand the game, still believes the same character is his well-wisher. Isn’t the ego doing the same to us? Always forcing us to seek more and more. Never allowing us to realise our potential. Always creating that feeling of dependency and weakness within. Making us look outward. Making Raavan think that getting Sita will make me happy. Making that billionaire think that acquiring another billion will make me happy. Making this body and mind just a tool to achieve. Not letting this body and mind meet the soul, the true self? Not allowing the soul to guide the body and mind. If anybody tries to show the mirror, we say that the mirror is defective. If anybody tries to tell the boy that his Uncle is exploiting him, that boy will develop enmity with that same voice. What’s the solution? Lord Ram sent Hanuman and Angad. Vibhishana also tried to tell him the truth. But Raavan will not understand till the last moment. Either we take a break and reflect on ourselves, or time does the same for us by bringing a crisis into our lives. The choice is ours.
